A program that provided an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits in Michigan has ended, Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency said in a post on its website Monday. The Extended Benefits EB program, which is mostly federally funded, turned on in October when the state was in a period of high unemployment.
But the agency said that Michigan's jobless rate is now below the threshold for EB to remain active. There were 96, claimants on the EB program in Michigan as of Feb. Department of Labor. For claimants who have already been paid their maximum weeks of EB, their EB claim is considered exhausted and there are no more weeks of benefits under that program available, the agency said.
Once a claimant has exhausted their regular 26 weeks of benefits and the additional 13 weeks of federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation PEUC benefits, the 20 weeks will automatically kick in, according to a news release. It is unclear whether filers for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance PUA , self-employed workers and independent contractors who would usually not qualify for state benefits, are eligible for the extended benefit weeks.
