He threatens and intimidates them with a loaded revolver, even manhandling Winnie and holding the revolver barrel at Winnie's head. Sissy Spacek is standing behind Ben Kingsley. She hits him on the head with a rifle butt, killing him. At this point the search party converge on the Tucks' home. They see Sissy Spacek kill Ben Kingsley, so she is arrested for murder and sentenced to be hanged.
Would any court find Sissy Spacek guilty of murder? She was obviously acting to defend her family and Winnie from an evil man with a loaded gun. Answer: It depends on the court. If the court believed killing the man was not necessary to save Winnie ie. A court could still find Mae Tuck guilty if they believe death was an excessive use of force in defending Winnie. I would be too tempted.
I would have stayed with the Tucks. Her home life sucked bad. Sep 06, AM. Sep 06, PM. I probably would have done what she did. There's something that freaks me out about living forever, even though I did like the Tucks. They never had to worry about wrinkles. I think she was tempted to drink the water, but I guess her better sensibilities over ruled.
Sep 12, PM. I liked the ending. She had puppy love for Jesse. Could that really translate into forever? I think even at so young an age, she knew better. I wouldn't have drunk the water.
Sep 25, PM. I liked the ending, I just wish there was a sequal to it, not about the living forever part but what happens to the characters after they made their desisions.
Winnie must have been tempted more than once to go back and drink from the spring, right? I still have daydreams in which I imagine what would happen if Jesse came back and found her daughter or something. Sep 26, PM. I agree with Tena It would have been awesome if there was a sequel. I loved this book but don't really know what I would've done if I was in Winnie's position I would have done as she did. I don't want to live forever on Earth. I've got better things coming my way:.

Sep 29, PM. Oct 16, PM. I would have what Winnie did. Living forever isn't my cup of tea. Feb 11, AM. I think the ending probably showed that as Winnie started to grow up, she realized she wanted to keep doing that. Perhaps she saw some of the anguish the Tuck family felt as time grew up around them but they stayed the same. Winnie was such a strong character. Personally, I would have been very tempted to drink the water because for one thing, I would have been glad to be Jesse forever and ever.
But if you had children? At the end of our story that takes place in the way-back 19th century, Winnie dumps her immortality juice on a toad and calls it a day. Hey, she can always go back to the spring for more, right? Lucky for us and our poor books which would otherwise be ripped to shreds , that's not the last we hear of Winnie.
Out handy dandy epilogue reveals that Winnie never did go back. She didn't drink from the spring, she didn't become immortal, and she didn't join the Tucks. It looks like Winnie took Tuck's words to heart and decided that the benefits of immortality weren't worth the sacrifices that it would require.
