Truex has three wins this year and is the points leader; Busch is fourth in points and seemingly safe but still winless. The cautions turned what looked as if it would become a fuel mileage race into a fight for survival. And gave Kahne and Brad Keselowski multiple opportunities to spin or win. In the end, it was trouble for others, namely Denny Hamlin and Paul Menard and Ty Dillon, that ended the all-day affair just before sundown. There had been an eight-car incident on the front stretch only moments earlier and a single-car crash — a three-wide move by Jimmie Johnson that went awry.
And those all occurred after the race went into overtime. A schedule change will see the Brickyard race conclude the regular season next year as the date moves from July to early September. The weather likely will be more cooperative. Whether the competitors will follow suit remains to be seen. Kyle Busch entered the Talladega fall race second in points and apparently safely set to advance in the Chase.
But he wrecked early while attempting to ride out laps in the back of the field, finished 40th and fell to ninth, one spot outside the advancement boundary. The schedule remained unchanged in terms of venues because of five-year sanctioning agreements the series began securing last season. There was some date-shuffling, however. With the schedule solidified, the industry can now concentrate on the remainder of this season, while planning for the future much earlier than in previous years.
