In addition, there's a traffic gauge on the map screen regardless of what view you're in that acts as a sliding scale of how good green or bad red the roads are at that moment.

Other navigation tools include automatic route recalculation and if you need to make a call or you receive a call, VZ Navigator will suspend services until you hang up, then update the directions. For more general use, Maps displays a map of any address in the United States, as long as it's in VZ Navigator's database.
You can search by address, Favorites, airport, or intersection. A feature called Follow Me will do just that; acting as a bread-crumb trail, Follow Me will track your traveled route, and you can also identify nearby places by pointing the cursor over a certain location and clicking the OK key. The Messaging option is quite useful but there's one caveat: It only works with other Verizon phones. The feature lets you send the address and coordinates of your location via text message to your friends and family.
You can add a personal note if you wish, such as "Meet me here," making it a great way to communicate if you're trying to coordinate plans. If the recipient also happens to be a VZ Navigator user, he or she can then view your location on a map, get driving directions, search for businesses around the area, or add it to their favorites list.
To be fair, you can send a similar message to an e-mail address but the SMS text option is more attractive if you're trying to catch up with acquaintances while out on the town. Local Search is much like the POI database found on in-car navigation systems.
You can search from more than 14 million POI, including gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, hotels, and movie theaters, and you can have VZ Navigator map its location or provide directions from your current location. Also, if a number is listed with the place of business, you can call it directly by simply pressing the Send button twice, which is great if you want to make dinner reservations on the fly, for example.
Verizon says it updates the database every several months for the most accurate information. VZ Navigator 4 takes local search further with Movies and Events, a new fuel finder feature, and weather updates. The predictable red-and-white interface elements clash with the nondescript, papyrus-like wallpaper in a dull dance of beige blah.
Overlaid on the 3D map are a speedometer with optional tie-in for local speed limit display , ETA to destination, current street, distance to destination, and distance to next turn.
The voices are nicer than some alternative navigation solutions, a little less grating. Speaking of U-turns: the app handled deviations from the plotted course well, rerouting us quickly when we got off the beaten path— even over slower 3G connections. We could have used virtual buildings in 3D mode to serve as landmarks; the building models are available as city-sized download packages within the app.
Without missing a beat, the app dutifully redirected us to The Lobster Shanty. Any app with such a rich feature load and such granular customization options is bound to have a few nits to pick, and VZ Navigator is no exception. We found it annoying that features like pinch-to-zoom and tap-and-drag were supported in the static map mode, but disabled once navigation had begun, forcing us to fiddle with little zoom keys in the corner.
In the worst of these failures, the app proved incapable of locating my home address when we wanted to return from Salem, forcing me to input the address of a coffee shop next door to my house so we could navigate back. Verizon Navigator is a curious product. The problem is Google Navigation. It got me right to the door of where I was going.
I had no problem paying for it back then because it got me where I was going and I trusted it. Not anymore. Used to be great but in last yr not as reliable as it used to be. The directions work great most of the time but It gets confused every time u are driving on a bridge over another street cause it cant tell anymore which youre on. Lots of the time itll tell me it cant locate me but that didnt used to be a problem.
