Racing King plans attack from his castle Trainer who learned tricks of trade from the Duke, happy in his hollow Chris Hawkins Tuesday 5 September The Guardian Barbury Castle stables nestle in a hollow on the Marlborough Downs amid the wilds of Wiltshire. The wind can be ferocious up there, so they say, but only gentle zephyrs have blown since Alan King moved in three months ago.

King, an affable, easy smiling man, is quite a contrast to his old boss David Nicholson. But the two men worked well together for almost 11 years and they are still complementing each other despite the latter's retirement last December.

At Jackdaw's Castle in the Cotswolds it was Nicholson who called the tune, but now King is in charge and having trained 33 winners last season has convinced many of the "Duke's" former owners to come with him. When Nicholson decided it was time to quit many thought King would be the obvious successor to take over Colin Smith's palatial Gloucestershire establishment.
