How long does rust take to form

Frequently, this is the case in chemical plants, in coastal areas, or near heavily traveled roads where air pollution is high. In these aggressive environments, it is important to apply protective coatings as soon as possible after the surface is thoroughly cleaned and dried before excessive contamination becomes present on the steel surface.

How long will it take for flash rust to appear after I clean a steel surface with Holdtight ? Depending on the climate, the steel quite easily could have rusted in days. How long does it take for vinegar to rust metal? Does vinegar remove rust? What is the most inexpensive metal? Can copper rust in water? Does Salt speed up rusting?

Is vinegar corrosive to metal? Why stainless steel does not rust? What liquid rusts metal the fastest? How do you speed up metal corrosion?

Does hydrogen peroxide rust stainless steel? Does hydrogen peroxide rust metal? How can I patina metal quickly? What liquid makes metal rust faster?

What does bleach do to metal? What is the fastest way to rust Corten steel? What is the equation for rusting? If you have two different metals in electrical contact, and both in contact with salty water, then effectively a battery is made.

Current flows, and the energy comes from the corrosion of the metals. Some companies sell blocks of zinc that you can attach to boats so that the zinc corrodes first, protecting the other metals. Vinegar and bleach have been tried and seem to affect the rusting rate. Fresh iron exposed to a hot atmosphere with plenty of oxygen and water will form a thin layer of rust immediately although if you look at a very short time after exposing the iron surface, you will have a very small amount of rust.

Any of the above variables can affect the rusting rate however. Can you think of more? I read what Tom said about the rate of rusting and stainless steel does rust! I did an experiment on rusting stainless steel and it rusted in water, salt water, vinegar, lemonade and red cordial.

Beth, thanks. The rate of stainless steel rusting is very sensitive to what type of stainless it is. The amounts of chromium, nickel etc.

When a 'stainless' steel has pockets of nearly pure iron, it will rust. If you've ever washed a car with alloy wheels you can see the same thing happening, as just minutes after being hit with water, the brake discs will rust over. Not sure what material the inside of the phone is, but it's probably plausible that if left damp, they could start to rust and show water damage. I'd hound them hard.

Have you asked them how come there was no sign of rust damage on the first inspection? You must log in or sign up to reply here.
